The “sea of clouds” in Tenerife is a weather phenomenon typical of this Canary island. The island is known for its varied climate, due to its mountainous terrain, which includes the highest peak in Spain, Teide.
The sea of clouds is a natural effect created by the trade winds, which push the clouds against the mountain slopes in the north of the island. Seen from the high summits, it creates the optical illusion of a calm, fluffy sea beneath the mountains.
At a certain altitude and at certain times of day, the sea of clouds takes on a slightly bluish tint, which is why less experienced hikers mistake it for the sea and wrongly assume they are at a lower altitude than they really are.
This phenomenon is most common during the summer months and is often seen in the coastal areas of the north of the island. When humid air from the Atlantic Ocean meets Tenerife’s mountains, it cools and condenses, forming clouds that build up at lower altitudes. While the coastal areas may enjoy clear skies, the mountains are covered by a thick blanket of cloud, creating a spectacular view and a unique experience for visitors.
The sea of clouds in Tenerife is a natural attraction that draws many tourists and photographers thanks to its scenic beauty, especially at sunset, when the warm colours of the sun are reflected on the clouds. Bear in mind that this phenomenon can be unpredictable, so there is no guarantee of seeing it at any particular time during a visit to the island.
One thing you should not miss on your trip to Tenerife is a visit to the various miradores (viewpoints) of Teide National Park to enjoy these views.
Some must-see stops are the Mirador de Chipeque, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of Teide and is also the perfect place to see its famous sea of clouds, and the Mirador de La Ruleta, one of the most visited viewpoints in Tenerife. From here you can see Los Roques de García, the Llano de Ucanca and the southern cirque of Las Cañadas del Teide.
From the Mirador de las Narices del Teide in Guía de Isora, you can enjoy a spectacular sea of clouds as well as a unique panoramic view that lets visitors marvel at the majesty of Teide. To get there, take the TF-82 road from the village of Chío.
