Carnival. Burning Lucas
La quema del Lucas” is a tradition that originated in Guía de Isora in 1794, as a
way to condemn Fray Lucas, a friar who was dismissed by the bishop due to his immorality. Every year, in the month of March, a doll representing Fray Lucas is burned, as a way of
ridiculing his behavior and condemning him to perpetual burning at the stake. At present, the
tradition consists of choosing the best "Lucas", dances, costumes and, of course, the
burning of the doll.
